HSP, SB3 and Partners Host Zoonotic Disease Detection and Reporting Workshop from 27-30 June 2023 in Mairipora, Sao Paulo, Brazil
HSP, the Brazilian Biosecurity and Biosafety Society (SB3), and partners from Argentina and Peru hosted the “Zoonotic Disease Detection and Reporting Workshop: Exploration of Opportunities and Challenges in Argentina, Brazil and Peru” workshop from 27-30 June 2023 in Mairipora, Sao Paulo, Brazil. HSP staff was joined by consultants Drs. Maria Espona, Ernesto Gozzer, Leila Macedo and Claude Saegerman as well as Daniel Gurley (US NDF) and Luciana Kohatsu (US-CDC). The workshop engaged 35 participants and speakers (17 from Brazil, 9 from Peru and 9 from Argentina) and included lectures from subject matter experts and small group work to identify gaps and priorities in molecular diagnostics, bioinformatics and surveillance reporting for the region. The workshop kicked off with an opening ceremony and welcome dinner on June 27, followed by speaker presentations on surveillance, bioinformatics and molecular diagnostics on June 28. On June 29 and 30, participants worked together in groups to define priorities for molecular diagnostics, bioinformatics and surveillance for the regions. Identified priorities will inform next steps of the project. Participants shared that the workshop gave important space for experts from across the region to share knowledge and experiences and develop draft next steps to better strengthen regional zoonotic disease detection and reporting.
